The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
