Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.
